Why is gardening so healthy – and trendy?
It’s predicted that by 2050 two-thirds of the world’s population will be city-dwellers. While there are plenty of ways to enjoy nature in a concrete jungle, people are starting to turn towards gardening – especially indoor gardening – to get a dose of greenery.
THE GREEN INFLUENCERS
Ten (even twenty) years ago, gardening was still seen as a past-time that parents or grandparents did. Now thanks to the powerful influence social media has, the younger generation has slowly started to view gardening as cool. For the past couple years beautiful images of gardens and indoor plants (like the photo seen below) have flooded Pinterest, Instagram and design blogs, which has inspired people to find novel ways to incorporate a bit of green into their living rooms, on their balconies and in their backyards.
Popular retailers Urban Outfitters and IKEA are currently offering options for people to grow their own indoor gardens, which is perfect for those of us who are low on space (and who unfortunately weren’t born with a green thumb). And if plants and seeds are considered cool enough to be in Urban Outfitters then you know that gardening has to be trendy now.
THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF GARDENING
It’s relaxing: Gardening can reduce stress levels, according to research.
It’s rewarding: Growing your own vegetables and plants is a responsibility. Seeing that first flower bloom or zucchini peek out makes you feel good knowing that all of that happened thanks to your careful nurturing.
It helps you feel more connected: To nature, not technology. When you garden you get to put the phone and computer aside and concentrate all of your attention on all of the beauty that’s in front of you.
