Your hands measure out perfect portions of food

A balanced diet is one of the best ways to maintain a radiant complexion. Learn how to use your hands to estimate the appropriate portion sizes from each food group.

While clean eating is what will give you glowing skin, there’s nothing wrong with having a breakfast pastry once in a while, or a piece of chocolate after dinner. The only time your skin becomes susceptible to breakouts is accidentally overindulging in these types of food, because of oversized portion sizes. Believe it or not, it’s actually quite easy to do without even realizing it: serving sizes have doubled in the last 20 years, many of us have the mentality that we need to finish all of the food on our plates, and we often underestimate the amount of food our bodies actually need. While you can control how much you eat by following the Japanese wellness advice of only eating until you’re 80% full, it’s easier to use your hands to measure out your food portions!

WHY THE METHOD OF MEASURING FOOD WITH YOUR HANDS WORKS

Your hands are proportionate to your body, which makes them the perfect measuring tools for portion size control. Most men, for example, need more food and have bigger hands than women, so their portions are bigger (suddenly it makes sense why they’re always eager to finish our food at restaurants…!).

When you eat the right amounts of food, it helps your body get the proper nutrition it needs which makes your skin more radiant, your digestion improves, and you can eat nearly anything without any guilt!

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR FOOD

An infographic from the food company Kptncook gives a few guidelines on how to estimate portion sizes:

The measurement: A clenched fist is 1 cup

Perfect for: Measuring pasta and limiting your chances of getting gluten face !

The measurement: The front section of a clenched fist is ½ of a cup

Perfect for: Measuring out ice cream so that you don’t overindulge in sugar

The measurement: The palm of your hand is 3 oz.

Perfect for: Measuring out meat or poultry for a main meal

The measurement: Your fingertip is 1 teaspoon

Perfect for: Measuring out butter for toast in the morning

The measurement: Half of your thumb is 1 tablespoon

Perfect for: Measuring out peanut butter to eat with an apple

The measurement: Two fingers is 1 oz.

Perfect for: Measuring out one portion of cheese for a snack

Keep in mind that while these guidelines work for most adults, if you’re an athlete or you exercise on a regular basis you may need more food than the hand measurements. If that’s the case, it’s important to listen to your body and give it (and your skin!) what it needs!
